penfieldAs a consequence of my recent move to the Nordics, I now spend more time than I care to admit researching practical outerwear options and varieties of long underwear –  yes I am more Bridget than Blogger these days. I have spent winter upon winter damp and cold in the name of looking fashionable, but this winter I am turning over a new leaf and opting for a sensible winter wardrobe. What I’ve found on my internet research spiral, is that there is a whole world of well-made, attractive coat and jacket options available that not only look good but also effectively keep the cold out – who wudda though it, hey? Function and Form.

So, meet my current brand crush, Penfield. Established in 1975 in Massachusetts (-15*C in the winter – brrrrrrrr!) the brand creates down insulated outerwear pieces that provide protection from the elements and don’t compromise on style. Think New England aesthetic meets the great outdoors, in fact their AW13 collection entitled “The Coldest Day” (how apt)  is all about loose, tomboy fits and menswear inspired pieces – perfect, right?

penfield2The autumnal palette of deep reds and forest greens are reminiscent of the colours you would expect to see on a hike in Colorado (not that I’ve hiked in Colorado, but you get the gist!). Heavy plaids and flannel shirts are designed to be worn oversized in a borrowed from the boyfriend manner and camo prints are big. If you want to channel the relaxed, boyish look with just the amount of preppy you should check Penfield out – masculine aesthetic and super stylish, tick! Unlikely to get frostbite this winter, tick, tick!penfield3
