Every year the “au natural” trend pops up in various guises. Being bare faced and youthful is forever a la mode (even if grey hair is making a comeback). Now if you are a twenty-something girl, living in a country where temperatures fluctuate between the minus figures outdoors, and then rocket to sauna like heights inside (thank you Sweden) your skin can look a bit blotchy at the best of times.

As a Girl in Menswear, it makes sense to embrace the androgynous beauty trend, or as has Vogue dubbed it, the ‘handsome’ trend. If you are borrowing from the boys this season, here’s how to do masculine minimalism whilst still looking fresh and feminine.

SKIN.

It’s all about pale matte skin, think totally scrubbed, barely their make-up. First things first, if you have aforementioned, red blotchy skin problem, you need to prep your canvas, so invest in a good exfoliator. I recommend REN micro polish cleanser, Dermalogica daily microfoliant or St Ives green tea scrub.

Instead of going for a heavy foundation, use a light illuminating tinted moisturiser, Laura Mercier offers a great selection, or alternatively apply a thin coat of Nars sheer glow over Nars Optimal Brightening Concentrate. Ditch the bronzer (argh I know!) and instead look to highlight your faces natural contours. Apply a peachy blush and a pearly highlighter (no glitter allowed) to your cheek bones and eye-lids – you want to achieve teenage flushed dewey skin not an oily look, although if honest my teenage skin was definitely more the latter. Check out By Terry for your highlighter or stay classic with Yves Saint Laurent‘s Touche Eclat.

EYES & EYEBROWS.

Now don’t freak out. You’re not allowed mascara for this look. I know, I know, this does not sit well with me either. Instead curl your eyelashes with a curler (I love Shu Uerma) and apply a transparent mascara like Maybelline‘s to your eyelashes. Use a light brown eyeliner pencil to outline your lids, and gently smudge for a more natural affect. The best eyeliner pencils I’ve come across are at Laura Mercier and Nars.

Now, with the handsome trend, its all about your eyebrows – you can thank Cara for that! To create a sculpted and defined brow you will need to tweeze away any stray hairs, but largely leave your eyebrows looking bushy. I recommend using either Eyeko eyebrow gel to shape and define your eyebrows, Nars Brow Perfector or Chantecaille brow definers. They’re all under £20 and will give your brows long lasting shape and colour.

LIPS

For your lips keep it nude and matte – Lipstick Queen does a collection called “Saint” which is perfect for finishing off the look.
