The-Stone-Roses1990

No one portrays bleak skies, tower blocks, northern soul and Doc Martens quite like Shane Meadows. Having created iconic indie classics like ‘This is England’ and ‘Somers Town’, his latest venture ‘The Stone Roses: Made of Stone’ has the same whispers of tougher times and unbreakable camaraderie. Set when Britain was cradled between the fall of the Berlin Wall and the arrival of its most controversial political period to date, this film is as much about the adoring and unfaltering fans of The Stone Roses as it is about the band itself.

The story goes that director Shane Meadows bought a ticket to see The Stone Roses perform at Spike Island in 1990 but a bad acid trip the previous night meant that he was in no fit state to attend. Two decades later he’s filming one of the biggest band reunions since the Rolling Stones kissed and made up, and if the reviews are anything to go by this will have ‘Searching for Sugarman’ retiring in its shadows quicker than you can say ‘Sally Cinnamon’ (in a Manchunian accent).

If you fancy recreating the look favoured by The Stone Roses here are the necessary ingredients to form said style:

1. A bowl cut a la Anne Catherine Frey – a truly epic modern day girlinmenswear.

NB Achieve this style by placing a medium sized plastic bowl over your head and cut carefully around it with a pair of sharp scissors – avoid kitchen, nail and Early Learning Centre pattern scissors at all costs. If your face isn’t,  well pretty damn perfect, the likelihood is the result of your DIY cut may be more  Moe Howard from The Three Stooges than an effortlessly chic Anne.  You’ve been warned.

2. I don’t care that it’s sunny and it’s almost 19*C outside ( yes as hot as 19*C!!!), to truly ooze grungy style you are going to have to pull on a heavy duty piece of outerwear – Liam Gallagher, fellow fashionable northerner has the perfect parkas for you from his brand Pretty Green. This one is in leather – extra toasty.

3. Lucky escape, shell suit not compulsory for the replication of the The Stone Roses’ look, however you’re going to have to stock up on some vintage Adidas pronto – this Originals Firebird tracksuit jacket will do the job.

4. A bucket or fishing hat is a 90’s must – handy if you’ve experimented with aforementioned hairstyle (see point 1) and it went horribly wrong.

It is the rare individual–female or male–who can really pull off the bowl cut. A classic, yes, but proceed with caution!

And I agree, if you’re not willing to put on some serious outerwear or at least a track jacket (which can get pretty warm, too) , then you’re just not serious in pulling off not just the Stone Roses look, but any real tribute to music-inspired style.

I would love to see a post with fashion ideas inspired by Morrissey…
